What Is a Third Grader

Tamsen Horton on a sunlit back porch, looking thoughtfully amused, with the text "You're not behind." overlaid in bold.

It's the first day of school, and I'm sitting on the back porch watching school buses roll past.

Toby is barking at the neighbor's dog. Tad is beside me — not getting on one of those buses, because we don't do that. And I'm thinking about third graders.

Specifically, I'm thinking about what a third grader is.

Not in the sense of a child — I know what children are. I mean the category itself. The label. Third grader: a box we drew around a certain set of expectations, a shorthand for what someone at that age should know, should be able to do, should be ready for.

But who drew the box? And why do we keep trusting it?

The buses disappear around the corner, and I keep pulling on this thread. Because the same thing happens in business. We have these invisible grade levels — new business owner, year one, year two, seasoned entrepreneur, ten-plus years in. And just like with actual grades, we assume the label tells us something true about what someone knows, what they're ready for, what they're capable of.

It doesn't.

The label is a construct. A useful organizational box. Not a truth.

And here's the thing about the scenic route — the one you took because life handed you a different map, or because you chose it, or because it just happened that way. The more winding your path, the more you tend to be ahead of where the label says you should be. You've navigated the unexpected. You know how to adapt. You've sat with the mundane long enough to not be rattled by it. You don't take the sharp turns personally.

Those are not small things. Those are the things the people who took the "right" road sometimes spend years trying to learn.

You're not behind. You're not ahead. You're on your scenic route. And that route has given you more than you're probably giving yourself credit for.

Third grade is a box. You've always been bigger than the box.

I share all of this on this stop of The Scenic Route — and I'd love for you to come along for the ride.
