Bonus Time

Tamsen Horton standing outside in morning light looking pleasantly surprised, with the text 'You Already Know' overlaid.

Kip's girlfriend's mom offered to drive.

That's it. That was the whole thing. One text, one offer, and suddenly I had an hour I wasn't supposed to have — 7am on a Wednesday, the kind of morning that's usually already spoken for before you even open your eyes.

And before the offer was even fully out of Kip's mouth, I already knew what I was doing with it.

That's not a flex. That's the system working.

For years — going all the way back to when the boys were small enough to nap — I've kept a pre-decided list for bonus time. Not a wish list. Not a someday list. A decided list. If you get thirty minutes back, here's what you do. If you get an hour, here's what you do. The decision is already made before the window ever opens.

And there's one item that's always non-negotiable: if you haven't done your workout yet, that's what the bonus time is for.

No deliberating. No standing in the kitchen weighing your options while the clock ticks. No negotiating with yourself about whether you "really need" to or whether you could just "do it later." You can't negotiate in a window that small. The window doesn't care about your internal dialogue. It's just there, and then it's gone.

Pre-decide. Take away your own ability to negotiate in the moment.

I've watched so many people lose their bonus time to the decision itself. They spend the first twenty minutes figuring out what to do with it, and then it's over. The gift became a problem.

What if it didn't have to be?

This episode is short, like a good bonus hour should be. It's about one mechanism that has quietly shaped how I move through my days — and how I've stopped letting surprise pockets of time slip through my fingers.

If you've ever stared at a suddenly free hour and felt weirdly paralyzed by it, press play. I think you're going to feel seen.
