Make the Space

I'm in the passenger seat.

Kip is behind the wheel — driver's ed — and I'm sitting in the sidecar, watching him navigate, and my brain is doing what it always does in a car: going somewhere entirely different.

I'm thinking about spaces.

Not the kind you park in. The kind you make.

It's Action August, which means this month is about finishing what matters. Getting the projects across the line. And the throughline I keep circling back to — whether I'm talking about a business idea, a creative project, or something more personal — is this: if you don't see what you want to exist in the world, make it.

The most generous mentors I know didn't start out trying to be generous. They started out trying to solve their own problem. The retreat that changed everything? She created it because she needed it. The dinner that became a community? She set the table because nobody else was setting it. The book that found thousands of readers? She wrote it for one person — herself.

And in making the thing for themselves, they made it for everyone who needed it too.

Kip is backing out of a parking spot and I lose the thread briefly. (51-year-old menopausal brain is very real, people.) But it comes back.

Making space for what you want is exactly like cleaning out the kitchen so there's room for the Ninja Creami.

You can't just add the new thing on top of everything already there. Something has to go. You have to know what you want, and then you have to actually clear the counter.

If you can articulate what you want — and that part matters, the articulating — the next question is simple. Not easy. Simple.

How do I make space for it?

Life is too short to keep taking up space you don't want to take up. I share the rest of this thought on this stop of The Scenic Route.
